OBITUARY GLADYS NOBLE FINCHUM
1923 ~ 2006
Gladys was born August 1, 1923, in Smithfield, Utah, to Ira Elias and Vera Jorgensen Noble. She grew up there with her 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She graduated from Seminary and North Cache High School in 1941.
She met Arnold Finchum, a US Navy sailor from Indianapolis, when he was sent to the USAC (now USU) to study Elementary Electricity and Radio in early 1942. After a U.S. Mail courtship of several months, she met him in San Francisco and they went to Reno, Nevada where they were married October 18, 1942.
The Navy sent Arnold to teach at the Bliss Electrical School in Tacoma Park, MD. Their first son, Kenneth Arnold Finchum, was born April 29, 1944, in Washington, D.C. Gladys followed him to Bath, Maine, when he was assigned to the USS Benner, a new ship where Arnold was an Electronic Technician. When the ship was deployed to the Pacific fleet to protect aircraft carriers the summer of 1945, Gladys returned to Smithfield for the duration of the conflict. After the war, Gladys and Arnold made their home in Smithfield while Arnold completed a B.S. in Radio at USU. A second son, Ted Gerald Finchum, joined the family September 9, 1947.
The family made several moves after Arnold’s graduation and he was employed as an engineer in Albuquerque, NM, Oxnard, CA, Canoga Park, CA, and Hurricane, UT. They returned to Logan and he completed a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at USU in 1959. Gladys and the boys followed her husband wherever he was employed: Professor of EE at USU from 1960-68, and various teaching and administrative positions at IUPUI; Indianapolis, IN; University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA; Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN; Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, where he retired in 1983. Gladys made many friends everywhere she went. She “mothered” many of Arnold’s students and graduate students. Her husband always says she was the "secret ingredient" to whatever success he achieved in his endeavors. Gladys always provided a lovely and loving home after each move.
Gladys and Arnold returned to Logan and he spent his “retirement” teaching EE students at USU. In 1988 Arnold was called to be Mission President for the Genealogy Library Missionaries in Salt Lake City and Gladys served as his Executive Assistant. Men and women from around the world served with them and Gladys was of great service to these "older missionaries" who helped thousands of people researching in the library.
Gladys was always an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and received a 25-year service pin for her devoted service in Primary, serving as president in two different wards. She was a Guide Patrol leader and a strong supporter of Scouting activities. She was Relief Society president in Stockton and Atascadero, CA, and a visiting teacher.
Gladys always made her family her top priority and was also very close to her parents, brothers and sisters. A favorite activity was going to Smithfield Canyon where her dad liked to fish and a picnic meal was enjoyed. She participated doing sports support for Ken and Ted’s Little League, and attended lots of their football, basketball, and baseball games. She was a fabulous cook and an expert at all kinds of needlework. She joined quilting groups and made beautiful cross stitch and other quilts for her sons and other family members. She knitted lovely intarsia Christmas stockings for all of her family. Her beautifully hand-stitched gifts are highly prized by all who received them.
Gladys made friends everywhere she went and she always remembered them with cards and phone calls. Due to increasing health concerns, Gladys and Arnold moved to Williamsburg. Friendly, outgoing Gladys quickly acquired another set of wonderful friends. She will be sorely missed by each member of her family and her thousands of friends across the United States.
She is survived by her husband and two sons, Kenneth (Linda), Ted (Kathy), six grandchildren: Melissa Olson (David), Carrie Quesnell (Mike), Wendi Gray (Ron), Kenneth Jim Finchum (Monica), Christopher (Emily), and Heidi Hall (DJ); and 19 ˝ great-grandchildren. Three brothers preceded her in death: Myrvin (Iris), Gerald (Lavon), and Don J Noble. She is also survived by her siblings NaDene (Don) Mikesell, Wayne Noble (Blanche), Harl Noble (Kaye), Mavis (Donn) Goode, and Lois (Stanley) Pettingill.
Funeral services will be held Saturday November 25 at the Bridgerland Park First Ward with Bishop Robert Zeller conducting. Viewings will be held at The Nelson Mortuary in Logan at 6 to 8 PM on Friday November 24 and on Saturday preceeding the services.

Number of visitors since 9 February 2001:
My name is Willis Arnold Finchum. I became interested in tracing my family history about 1970. Since that time I have learned a lot about many of my ancestors.
I established The FINCHAM/FLINCHUM/FINCHUM FAMILY ORGANIZATION several years ago and advertised in Evertons Genealogical Helper for several years, but have had very little response.
I have been publishing an Annual Family News Letter at Christmas for many years. It first went to immediate family and then was broadened to include many genealogical references. I hope to make at least part of them available as part of this Web Site.
This Web Site is an attempt to coordinate with as many of the family as I can find. I will start with what I know and sometimes what "I think I know" about the origins of our family.
This report is just an attempt to get the earliest data that I have been able to gather on my WEB page.
Please note that this is NOT anywhere near a final form. I have at times Linked family members together without really having enough PROOF of that relationship. I have tried to make some of the reasoning in the Notes.
I Have put ALL the data I have, including correspondence, about FINCHAM/FLINCHUM/FINCHUM and also some on FINCHEM on my World Connect list and HAVE Been keeping it FAIRLY up to date. The URL is : http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=waf2004I hope at least some of you will check out my data and let me know of some that you think may be in error and will want to add to the data.
I want to try to get it in the Family History Library in SLC as soon as I can. I am getting old enough that I may not have much more time. I am now 83 (in 2004) years of age .
Thanks to perservance and the help of many dedicated family members, a book, entitled "The Flinchums and Nixons of Stokes and Surry Counties is in the final stage. This book was started in 1995 and contains not only facts about how these two families began in America, but also includes information about the Ashborns, Boaz family, the Dennys, Fulks, Gordons, Hiatts, Hodges, Jones, Keys, Smiths, and Stones and how we are all related.
This hard cover book, which numbers more that 500+ pages, has more than 200 pictures and illustrations combined to tell the story. There is a section devoted to the Flinchum Parlor as documented by various newspapers. A number of wills, deeds, and census records are also recorded. Names of family members who have served in the different brances of service beginning with the Revolutionary War to the Cuban Conflict have been included. A portion has been devoted to the letters of Azariah Denny (brother-in-law of Jonathan Flinchum. Jonathan was a brother of William Madison Flinchum) during his service in the civil War
.More was in the note I received from Martha.
***********I now have a copy of the book. Will try to answer any questions about it.**************Will do limited number of lookups.

Links to other parts will be used to make it easier to navigate to the parts of particular interest, i.e. help you "surf the family" . The links that are first established may not work for a while, but I plan to keep doing what I can as learn HOW to do it. Links at bottom of page are "active links" and more will be added as they are discovered.
The United States of America FINCHAM are first found in in Virginia and Maryland, 1740 to 1840. It is thought that all of the Virginia FINCHAM's descended from John or Robert FINCHAM who were both transported to MD or VA on the ship Essex from Essex, England in 1740. No proven link has been found.
A FINCHAM Web Site in England Is operated by David FINCHAM. He has recently (1999) made a number of significant changes to his Site. The "old" Electronic Directory is available for observation but is no longer maintained. He has switched to a Guest Book and you will find lots of data and comments there. Pictures of FINCHAM VILLAGE are also available on his site. David has set up a FINCHAM exchange in egroups. and you are encouraged to use it also.More FINCHAM information Courtesy of David Westwood who signed my Guest Page. David's picture is on bottom of this page.
Most of the descendants in Virginia : (Thought to Descend from John FINCHAM)
Nearly all use surname as FINCHAM, but some
Culpeper Co., VA records do show FINCHUM sometimes
Shortly after 1790, Robert FINCHAM (sometimes FLINCHUM or FLINCHAM) moved to Stokes County, NC with his wife's family the Pinegar's. where he is consistently referred to as FLINCHUM First four generations of his descendants are listed in a GENBOOK Format. A listing of ALL (That I have!!) of the descendants of Robert and Mary Pinegar is:
Descendants of Robert Flinchum and Mary Pinegar.
His son William FLINCHUM moved to Washington County, TN in the 1820's and records there have him listed as FINCHAM, FLINCHUM, FLINCHAM, and FINCHUM. He with most of his children moved to Cocke Co, TN before 1840 and *********************************************************** William has many descendants in TN and elsewhere, all of whom used the surname of FINCHUM. ************************************************************* All of Robert's other family kept FLINCHUM. Most of them remained in NC, but some went to Washington Co., VA and some to TN and soon to Breathitt Co. , KY.
William FINCHUM's sons Robert and Elijah moved to Monroe Co., IN between 1827 and 1830. They moved on to Morgan County, IN Robert is the ancestor of most FINCHUM in Morgan Co. and others in Indiana. Elijah apparently died before 1850 and has some descendants in Indiana
In 1840's another Robert FINCHAM moved from Culpeper Co., VA to Licking Co., Ohio
In 1850's this Robert FINCHAM moved from Ohio to Illinois. Most of his descendants are FINCHAM, but one branch becomes FINCHUM
There are two major FINCHAM families known to have immigrated from England to America in 1870-1880. Both "Ended up in Kansas" All that I have now is listed in Edward FINCHAM and in Isaac FINCHAM below. I invite members of this family to submit more data. I have had some correspondence from some of you already. Hope this helps. Edward FINCHAM descendants are listed in a GENBOOK report. Note that this is a "preliminary" report and includes ALL Notes that I have accumulated on this family. Subject to change at any timeIsaac FINCHAM descendants are listed in a GENBOOK report.
